Capello: I Never Thought Of Quitting England

Fabio Capello never thought of resigning from his £6 million a year job at the England reign.

Speculation that Capello was considering his position ahead of the final group game against Slovenia were wide of the mark, according to sources close to the England manager.

“Resignation was not in Fabio’s thoughts,” a close confidante of Capello told Soccernet “He has never discussed such a possibility. He has never walked away from anything in his life, so I have no reason to believe he would have made an exception with England.

“Fabio’s attitude has always been to fight and to fight on and against everything and everybody. He is no quitter, so this was not in his mind, I don’t think so, no.”

England beat Slovenia 1-0 to progress from Group C, but there had been speculation that Capello would walk, or be sacked, if the Three Lions failed to reach the second round amid reports of tensions in the camp.

However, that was never the case. “He is enjoying his work with the FA and with the England team, he loves every moment he spends with the players,” the England insider added.

“It has been really good in the training camp, and it is only the media making something out of nothing to suggest otherwise. There have been issues, minor issues, nothing more. But Fabio still enjoys his job and I don’t think his intention is to leave, absolutely not.

“Sometimes you get results, sometimes you don’t, and by that I mean Slovenia had a late chance and might have got the draw to knock out England, yet the performance was much better and the win gives the team the confidence to keep going.

“Under the circumstances, it would not have been a case of calling for the manager to resign, or for the manager to have even considered it even if England had gone out.”

England finished second in Group C, behind the USA, and will face Germany at the Free State Stadium on Sunday.
