Switzerland failed to find a breakthrough after a 0-0 draw with Honduras in Friday night’s Group H encounter. The Swiss came into the match needing a win will send them through the last 16 with two Europe teams but they failed to do so.
Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfield, who knew that a 2-0 win would send them through the last 16, was disappointed when his side were toothless and settled for a point against fellow eliminated side Honduras, who only finished with 1 point in Group H.
Alexander Frei was once again placed on the bench even tough he was 100% fit after an injury – and he scored 40 goals for Switzerland in 76 games.
The striker came was substituted at the 69th minute but failed to break the deadlock although his national side had 56% of the possession in the match.
After the final whistle was blown at the Free State Stadium at Bloemfontein, the Swiss players were left sprawled and knew they were eliminated from the FIFA World Cup 2010 Group Stages.
However, if Switzerland were to go through, all the two European teams will be through.
