There will be a widespread fall of the axe on Chelsea players and coaching staff at the end of the season if they fail to win a trophy (or the Double) in an ultimatum issued by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, it has been revealed. After the humbling defeat to Inter Milan which saw the English Premier League club tumble out of the Champions League on Tuesday, Abramovich showed up at Cobham the day after, at the club’s training facilities, and held a meeting in which the decree was passed down amidst fierce and strong words that demanded his players prove that they were worth the money he was paying them. Several of these players who are now walking a tightrope are believed to include big names like Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard and certainly John Terry who is clearly a star on the wane.
Abramovich was said to be displeased with the decline of the club on and off the pitch, especially the recent sordid personal affairs of players like Terry and Ashley Cole, which has threatened any chances of silverware for the club this season. The situation has risen to a level such that none of the players are now considered untouchables. Ironically, John Terry and Frank Lampard had only earlier in the season claimed that they were the ones who actually run the club but now they could be deemed cancerous and chopped off.
“Roman didn’t actually say that much but it was clear from what he did say and his body language that he was absolutely furious.”
“Nobody knew he was coming to Cobham on Wednesday and certainly nobody expected the three most powerful men at the club to call a meeting.
“It was Tenenbaum who did most of the talking. Well, actually, there was as much shouting as talking. He made the points that Roman obviously wanted to get across.
“The meeting lasted almost two hours and it wasn’t a debate, it was the boss getting a message across and everybody was pretty clear about what it meant. If there wasn’t a dramatic change, then there would be new faces coming in the summer.
“It wasn’t just the players he was talking about, it was the coaches and the medical people as well. Nobody felt safe coming out of the meeting.”
