Liverpool Beat West Ham To Retain Faint Champions League Hopes

Liverpool cruised to an easy 3-0 win over West Ham United at Anfield in the EPL live to keep alive their Champions League hopes. Goals from Yossi Benayoun, David Ngog and an own goal from Robert Green killed off the Hammers’ lacklustre challenge while keeping the Anfield club on the trail of both Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

Despite being five points behind Spurs in sixth place and playing a game more, Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has refused to write off his club’s chances of sneaking into the Champions League. The Reds have to win all their remaining three matches while hoping that both City and Spurs will drop enough points to let them through.

“It hasn’t gone. We know it’s going to be difficult. Other teams have done well: Tottenham have done really well but they have a tough game against Manchester United so hopefully they will slip up.” Carragher said.

Carragher also claimed that Liverpool had a tough time against the Hammers despite the suggestion of the scoreline indicating a stroll for the Reds. “It’s always a tough game. They are fighting for their lives and I think everyone has a soft spot for West Ham and hope they stop up.”

Liverpool’s next assignment will be a tougher one as they now need to set off on a long journey via rail and over land for their Europa league semi final first leg against Atletico Madrid. Flight travel has been disrupted in most of Europe after the volcanic ash cloud in Poland.

There was some positive news for Liverpool on Monday night as Torres understudy, David Ngog, bagged his fifth goal in 10 EPL starts for the club. The young French striker has had to bear much criticism and unfair comparisons with the Spain international after standing in for Torres due to the latter’s problems with injuries this season.

Ngog had manager Rafael Benitez singing his praises after the match. “To replace Fernando is difficult and everyone is expecting to see the same things, but he is totally different.” The comments should give Ngog a lift before he leads the team out against a much stronger opposition in Madrid.
