Chelsea skipper John Terry was further embroiled in another controversy on Wednesday after it was revealed the former England captain was involved in a hit and run incident at Stamford Bridge. Terry drove into a Chelsea security guard and broke his leg and instead of stopping immediately to help a fellow employee, the defender just sped off in his Range Rover. Police later went to his home to take breathalyser tests and questioned him in the early hours of Wednesday. It would be interesting to see how the law deals with this case as if it was a normal person on the street, it would amount to serious criminal charges. However, footballers, especially those in the English Premier League, can often get away with anything.
As usual with John Terry, the blame was never on him and his spokesman made the following remarks:
“John was coming out of the car park and he was surrounded by paparazzi photographers. He was not driving very fast and a security guard waved him through. There were some fans there and they were telling the photographers to get out of the way.” – Goal.com UK
However, in a move that should mitigate the circumstances, John Terry did telephone the security guard hours after the incident to apologise for breaking his leg and not stopping to help him.
