Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson admits to the media that he was interested in signing David Villa before the striker’s move to Barcelona – just before the World Cup started.
David Villa has been one of the best strikers in the tournament so far with five goals to his name so far. He is currently on the race for the Golden Boot.
The Spanish star has flourished into one of the world’s finest strikers at Valencia but joined Spanish giants Barcelona on May 19 with a reported fee of £35 million.
“We’ve looked at a few options,” Ferguson told the Mail on Sunday. “We did consider David Villa but he was always going to Barcelona.
“I just don’t believe there is value out there at the moment. I’m very happy with the strength of our squad as it is.”
United’s star striker, Rooney had a disappointing World Cup and returning home after England’s 4-1 defeat to Germany during their last 16 encounter.
Ferguson has dismissed suggestions that fitness problems were at the root of Rooney’s poor displays and says he expects the forward to be back to his best at the start of the domestic season in August.
“There’s nothing wrong with the lad or his fitness,” Ferguson said. “He’s relaxing on holiday in Barbados and I expect him to come back refreshed for the new season.”
